GETTING AROUND IN BUDAPEST

How do I travel the simplest and cheapest way in Budapest?

Important: You should have a ticket or a valid pass before getting on board of the vehicle. The tickets should be validated by the punchers before starting your trip on the Metro lines, or right after getting on other means of transport. Budapest Transport Limited (BKV) is authorized to check the validity of your ticket or pass any time during your trip.

If you regularly travel by means of public transport, the best arrangement for you would be to buy a transportation pass.

ISIC card (International Student Identification Card)

If you have your valid international student identification card with you, you can purchase the 1-month student pass for 3850,- HUF.
See the 1-month student pass in the bulleted list below.

Single Ticket

You can use a single ticket on public transport. This allows you to ride any public transportation vehicles. One TICKET is valid for one uninterrupted journey of up to 60 minutes. Note, that single TICKETs can be purchased at Metro stations, tobacco shops, and sometimes even on buses. Tickets can be validated by means of meters on board or at station entrances. The validated tickets should be kept till the end of the trip and handed over to the ticket inspector on request.

One piece of single ticket costs 320, - HUF.
It is cheaper to buy a 10-piece discount coupon book (gyűjtőjegy) rather than buying the single tickets separately (2800 Ft/10 tickets).

How do I ask for it?

Pass Holder

What is it?

The pass HOLDER is the case in which you place the transportation pass. (See it above at the "2-weeks pass" section".) The pass HOLDER is not a pass and it is not valid for travel by itself. You need to keep the transport pass in the HOLDER to be able to travel by means of public transport in Budapest.

Where can I buy it?

To get a HOLDER you have to go to the main metro stations with a passport size photo and 120 HUF and they prepare it for you.

How do I ask for it?

For how long is it valid?

Once you have the pass HOLDER you do not have to get another one unless you lose it or destroy it. When you buy a new transport pass you place it in the HOLDER and it will be valid.
